The Pennsylvania Italian Greyhound Rescue has been accepting and adopting Italian Greyhounds since around 1998. We have historically had foster homes in most medium and large cities across the state, so taking dogs in to our program or doing home visits hasn't been difficult. We partner with some of the local humane socieities in Pennsylvania including the Humane Animal Rescue in Pittsburgh (previously known as the Animal Rescue League of Western PA and Western Pennsylvania Humane Society), and other breed rescues like the National Greyhound Adoption Program in Philadeplphia. Other shelters and all-breed rescue organizations have also called upon the PA Italian Greyhound Rescue in the past to take dogs in smaller towns. In the late 1990s and 2000s, the PA iggy rescue was placing dozens of dogs a year in to new homes, and much of that slowed down between 2010 and now.
Meetups have been a common occurance in Pittsburg for many years. The group often meets at local doggie daycares, parks or other spaces a couple of times a year. These events are a good way for Italain Greyhounds to socialize with their own breed, for owners to talk, and to help collect donations to help keep the rescue group operating. Themed events such as Pancakes and PJs, Halloween costume contests, and even an ugly sweater contest around the holiday season have proven very popular. Meetups have also been held in the Philadelphia metro area, and in Central PA too. And, there is usually a troop of Italian Greyhounds found at Greyhounds in Gettysburg which is an annual fundraiser for their large racing cousins. The Italian Greyhounds have even managed to have their own group march in the annual parade too!
Pennsylvania is a challenging state to cover because of it sheer geographical size, so over time there have been generally multiple representatives helping to cover the entire state. Transporting from one area of the state to the other takes many hours, and with lots of open land it takes some dedicated volunteers to cover all that driving when a transportation is needed. On occassion a volunteer pilot has flown dogs from Pittsburg to other areas of PA, to New York or New Jersey even. Pennsylvania has been divided in to Eastern, central and Western areas. The Western area encompasses the city of Pittsburg and surrounding metro areas up to Eire sitting against the shores of the great lake of the same name. The central region includes the cities of Altoona, State College, Harrisburg, York, Lancaster and Reading. And, lastly the Eastern region has generally included the entire metro area of Philadelphia, plus Allentown up to Wilkes-Barre and Sranton.
