Finalizing an Adoption
Now that you have already submitted the Adoption Application and a home visit is complete, selecting a dog is the only step that is left. Based on all of the information that your rescue rep has gathered, they can help determine if a particular Italian Greyhound will fit well in your home, or help guide you in finding a suitable companion. IGRF rescue representatives don't want to select a dog for you, rather based on our experience help show you dogs that may fit the best your home. We feel the connection between a potential owner and any dogs they are considering is highly important to ensure both the IG and the owner are happy in the end.
Adoption Contract
Once the right dog has been selected all you need to do is complete the adoption contract, and determine a day and time when you will officially adopt the Italian Greyhound. The adoption donation amounts for IGRF foster dogs are outlined on the adoption contract, based on the age of the dog you are adopting.
Download the adoption contract in a format which your computer can open or print:
If you do not have the capability to open the above documents, please let your local rescue representative know so they can bring a copy for you to complete. You can also download and install the free programs Open Office or Adobe PDF Reader to read and print the forms.
Note: We need a paper copy of this adoption contract returned for our records, rather than an electronic copy. Since we are a non-profit organization, we need proof of where all of our dogs originate from, and where they are adopted for auditing purposes.
Does the Dog Come With Anything?
Every dog adopted through the Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation comes with an identification tag specific to that animal which is then assigned to your home, so if the dog is lost and wearing the tag we can help reunite it with your family. We also provide a simple, but effective, martingale type collar and leash set as part of our adoptions so that the dogs will be less likely to escape during a walk, if spooked for example.
Although we do not microchip the dogs from our program, many do already have microchips implanted in them which can be re-registered under your name too. A new FREE service that allows you to register ANY BRAND of microchip is available by visiting the Microchip Registry.
We do try to provide other things such as veterinary records we have received from previous owners (with names removed for privacy), a small supply of food to help transition the dogs, and sometimes other things such as favorite toys, a sweater or other items that belong to that dog.
We do also sometimes have extra kennels available for an extra donation, and other dog supplies like coats, chews, or belly bands (diapers). If you are interested in knowing if any adoptable dogs come with other items please ask your rescue representative what the dog has, or about any items they may offer which help benefit the rescue too.
Payment of Adoption Donation
The adoption donation amounts are outlined on the adoption contract, and based on the age of the dog being adopted. We prefer the adoption donation be paid by check, cashier's check, or money order payable to the "Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation". Note: Although your local or state rescue affiliate may go by a different name, to abide by anti-terrorism financing regulations all checks should be made out to the "Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation".
If you do not have a checking account available, you can talk to your local rescue representative about making a cash donation, or about using PayPal to finalize your adoption. All adoptions must be paid in-full before the adoption is final, and the dog can live in the adoptive home. We do not accept credit card payments to pay for the adoption of an Italian Greyhound. Credit card companies charge between 3-5% in fees which instead can be spent on veterinary care for the dogs in our foster homes.
Our adoption donations are set at an amount to keep our non-profit operating and helping dogs well in to the future. If you do not have money to adopt an Italian Greyhound, please also consider if it is a right time for you to adopt and assume additional costs of dog food, veterinary costs, and other needs as they arise.
